How To Regrow Thinning Hair

Did you know that losing roughly 50-100 hairs daily is considered normal? 

Chances are, unless the reflection in the mirror is starting to concern you, the normal amount of hair you lose in a day isn’t even on your radar. 

But, what happens when you begin to notice hair loss? What if you begin to notice your once thick head of hair starting to look a little, or a lot, thin? 

For men and women alike, no matter how common, this occurrence can be embarrassing and cruelly frustrating. 

Thankfully, there are some ways to combat the issue of thinning hair! 

Below you’ll find some tips for regrowing thinning hair, and why you may be experiencing this in the first place. 


What’s At The Root Of Hair Thinning?

Those who suffer from thinning hair often conclude they are losing their hair. However, hair thinning and hair loss aren’t quite the same. 

Hair thinning is considered to be a first stage of hair loss, but just because your hair is thinning, doesn’t necessarily mean you are going bald. 

And, while age is a primary culprit of thinning hair, there are actually a few other reasons why you may be noticing that your hair isn’t as thick as it once was.

1- Habits

As some common practices or habits are often the culprit when it comes to both hair loss and thinning hair, you could be unknowingly contributing to this problem. 

If you practice any of the following, you could be contributing to hair thinning or ultimately hair loss.

  • Harsh products and practices such as perms, coloring, and even extreme hold gels and sprays can cause thinning hair. 
  • Do you wear your hair “up” or pull your hair “up” frequently? This can cause breakage at the point where the band meets the hair strands, and it can even cause hair to pull from the follicle, which contributes to thinning. 
  • How’s your diet? If you aren’t regularly getting the proper amount of vitamins and minerals in your diet, your hair can suffer.

    For instance, folic acid is needed by your body to produce hair. If you are lacking this B vitamin, you can experience hair loss and/or thinning. 

    Magnesium is needed for hair growth, and lacking both zinc and biotin can contribute to hair loss. 

    Not getting enough of these vitamins and minerals may be at the root of your thinning hair problem. 
2- Hormones

Hormones can play a huge role in hair growth and hair loss or thinning as well. 

  • If you’re overly stressed you can experience hair thinning or loss due to the hormones that are produced in abundance to help your body combat this added stress. 

    Stress hormones like cortisol can even prevent new hair from growing. We mentioned earlier that we commonly lose 50-100 strands of hair daily. A lack of new growth due to stress hormones makes that normal loss lead to abnormal amounts unreplenished. 
  • Hormonal changes that occur in puberty, during and after pregnancy, during menopause, and from drastic changes in weight (loss or gain) can affect hair growth as well. 
  • In men, high levels of testosterone and an androgen known as DHT are thought to contribute to thinning hair by accelerating the process of the hair growth cycle.
3- Hereditary 

Hereditary traits are thought to center solely around genetics, but in the instance of hair loss or thinning, it seems to be that genetics alone aren’t at the root of hair thinning and loss. 

While those who receive what some refer to as the “hair loss gene” from both mother and father are more predisposed to hair loss and thinning, for the most part, genetics seem to combine with both hormones and the natural aging process to cause thinning hair. 

What Can You Do To Combat Hair Loss?

Now that you know some reasons why your hair may be thinning or falling out, what can you do about it? 

Fortunately there are many things that can both aid in regrowing hair and minimize hair loss! 

If you’re lacking needed vitamins and minerals, taking a multivitamin or other supplements addressing such deficiencies can boost hair growth. 

There are also supplements you can take that are specifically designed to address the issue of hair loss or thinning. 

Some claim hair thinning can be exacerbated, or even caused, by inflammation. Because of this, omega 3 and omega 6 supplements containing needed fatty acids, which are used to help the body fight inflammation, are recommended to facilitate hair regrowth. 

Ginseng is another supplement that is believed to facilitate hair growth, which works by stimulating hair follicles. 

You may be able to skip the supplements and get needed vitamins and minerals straight from your diet. 

Protein is vital to healthy hair. Lean meats, poultry, fish, and beans are great sources of protein to promote hair health. 

And, foods rich in iron, folic acid, and zinc should be included in your diet to facilitate hair regrowth and keep your hair healthy. 

Shellfish, liver, legumes, pumpkin seeds, and red meats are high in iron. 

Foods rich in folic acid include chickpeas, liver, kidney beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and leafy green vegetables. 

And, beans, nuts, red meats, oysters, and poultry are all great sources of zinc. 

Barbers aren’t just pampering their customers when they give them a scalp massage. 

The truth is, as good as that scalp manipulation feels, they’ve learned a thing or two about hair growth, and that extra bit of tlc will actually put you back in their chair a bit sooner. 

Why? Because massaging the scalp stimulates hair growth. 

You can take a few moments in the shower to massage your fingertips into your scalp as you shampoo your hair, or even just incorporate the practice for a few moments here and there throughout the day to facilitate hair regrowth. 

Essential Oils
Essentials oils are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative means to traditional medicines. 

They are derived from plants and when combined with what is known as a carrier oil (oils like coconut, jojoba, olive, and almond), they can be highly effective at treating a number of ailments and conditions. 

Lavender oil, specifically, has been noted for hair regrowth. 

And, this oil combined with rosemary and thyme essential oils has been found to be successful at regrowing hair as well. 

Both lemon and geranium essential oils have also been known to assist in hair regrowth.

No matter which oil you choose, you can add a few drops to your shampoo or combine them with a carrier oil to use as a hair mask to facilitate hair growth. 

Do note that essential oils should be used in small amounts on a test area (such as your arm) first to ensure that you are not allergic (a time period of 24 hours is recommended to see if a reaction occurs). 

Apple Cider Vinegar
An oily scalp may be the culprit of thinning hair as well. 

As excessive oils build up, hair follicles can become clogged, stopping new hair from growing. 

Apple cider vinegar contains alpha-hydroxy acids that dissolve built up oils. And, its acetic acid content facilitates new hair growth by stimulating blood flow to the area.

You can make a solution of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water to spray onto your hair and scalp to help regrow thinning hair. 

Once you spray on the solution, simply massage it into your scalp (which we learned earlier will also promote hair growth). Allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes on your hair and scalp, then rinse with cool water, and shampoo as you normally would. (repeat 2x per week for 4 weeks)

Aloe Vera
Like apple cider vinegar, you can apply aloe vera to your hair and scalp to unclog built up oil from hair follicles. 

Aloe can also soothe your scalp and nourish your hair as well. 

You can apply pure aloe vera gel from an aloe plant or look for shampoos and conditioners that contain aloe. 

While thinning hair is frustrating, there are a number of things that can be done to facilitate regrowth. 

However, from diet or habit changes, to any of the tips or practices listed above, remember that results require consistency and patience.
